questions about bass guitar amps?
What is the difference between programable power and continuous power? also what is ohms? I am looking to buy the fender bassman 410 cabinet and it has 700 watts programmable power (350 watts continuous) at 8 ohms. Does this mean for the amp that goes along with it, it shouldnt be more than 350 watts, or would i be able to use a 700 watt amp with it? also if you could explain ohms that would be great!
thanks!
The only thing that you should worry about is the continuous power. It is the amount of power that it is able to continuously put out. Ohm is basically a measurement of impedance (resistance) to a current of power. Most bass amps and cabinets either have 8 or 4 ohms.
If you get a cabinet that can handle 350 watts continuously the amp should put out no more than 350 and it would be recommended that you get less to reduce the chance of damaging the cabinet at full volume. A lot of people get amp heads that can put out more watts than the cabinet can handle and then blame the company for making bad products after the speakers blow. Please don’t do that! You will save a lot of money!
Since the cabinet has 8 ohms of impedance, you will need an amp with either 4 or 8 ohms. NEVER get an amp with more ohms than the cabinet or else you risk the chance of a fire.
Here are simple ways to calculate the ohms you have if you use more than one cabinet.
If you have multiple cabinets with the same ohms: impedance of single cabinet / number of cabinets = total impedance
If you have multiple cabinets with different ohms: (impedance of cabinet 1 X impedance of cabinet 2) / (impedance of cabinet 1 + impedance of cabinet 2) = total impedance
If you use an amp with 4 ohms and a cabinet with 8 ohms, you will only get half of the power being put through a single cabinet. If you use an amp with 4 ohms and two cabinets with 8 ohms, you will get the full amount of power being put out of two cabinets. If you use an amp with 4 ohms and a cabinet with 4 ohms, you will get the full amount of power being put through a single cabinet. So essentially, cabinets with 8 ohms can be louder than cabinets with 4 ohms if you use two of them at once.
Sorry if I made it little bit confusing, but I hope I helped!
